The Waters OXICOM-2000 Oximeter provides a quick measurement of oxygen saturation of asmall sample of whole blood. The OXICOM-2000 uses a silicon photo detector and light emitting diodes mounted in a sealed housing within the instrument. The blood sample is contained in an optically clear, disposable cuvette. The blood-filled cuvette is inserted through the front of the instrument into the housing. Blood is not infused into the unit. One light is emitted by the diodes at two frequencies (colors) and measured; the red responds tothe amount of oxygenated blood in the path of light while the other infra-red (IR) responds to the amount of blood in the optical pathway and is independent of the degree of oxygenation of blood. Since light absorption by the blood at 800 millimicrons wavelength (IR) is a function of the total amount of hemoglobin contained in the blood and light absorption at 660 (Red) millimicrons is a function of theamount of oxyhemoglobin and total hemoglobin, the ratio of the intensity of the light reaching the Redcell to that reaching the IR cell is a function of the oxygen saturation of the blood sample. The light intensity produces a proportional change in photo detector output voltage. This voltageis measured by the on-board computer. During use, the onboard computer compensates for non-specific changes. This is accomplished by measuring the light emitted with no blood in the housing. It then measures the light absorbed by the sample. Given these values, it uses them to calculate O2%.
