Used Perkin Elmer Spectrophotometers

As one of the top biotech companies, Perkin Elmer sells a very wide variety of instrumentation. Among these offerings are their tried-and-true spectrophotometers, which have been popular on both the new and used markets for years now. We’ve interviewed our senior technician (who personally tests and repairs every Perkin Elmer spectrophotometer that comes through our shop here at New Life Scientific) and compiled his insight below. If you’re in the market for a “new” Perkin Elmer spectrophotometer, we suggest that you keep reading – you may learn something valuable.

The Lambda Series

Perkin Elmer manufactures one line of cuvette spectrophotometers: the Lambda series. The Lambda line is long-lived, with older models easily found on the used market and a plethora of newer models available from Perkin Elmer. Each model is tailored with different demands and budgets in mind. Let’s dive into the details of the previous generation of Lambdas, which we here at NLS are most familiar with.

Lambda 25

Described by Perkin Elmer as “an ideal match for most routine UV/Vis applications”, the Lambda 25 is the most affordable option of the previous generation. Like both the 35 and the 45, it can scan anywhere from 190 to 1100 nm. However, it has a fixed bandwidth of just 1 nm. For many labs this is sufficient, but if you analyze a variety of samples, then a 25 may not be the best choice for you.

The Lambda 25 is appropriate for:

-        Routine UV/Vis testing

-        Liquids analysis

-        Pharmacopeia/regulatory testing

Lambda 35

Featuring variable bandwidth of 0.5 to 4 nm as opposed to the 25’s fixed 1nm bandwidth, the 35 is a step forward in terms of flexibility. However, it still does not have the pre-monochromator found in the 45. Consequently, the 35 can’t match the 45’s degree of accuracy or precision. Nonetheless, it still offers great utility to labs with varying analysis requirements.

The Lambda 35 is appropriate for:

-        Routine UV/Vis testing

-        Liquids analysis

-        Solids, pastes, and powder samples

-        Regulatory tests requiring variable bandwidths

Lambda 45

With all the specs of the Lambda 35 and a pre-monochromator, the Lambda 45 is the most powerful model of its generation. Its pre-monochromator reduces light stray, which results in more accurate, higher-resolution scan results. We haven’t yet had a Lambda 45 through our tech shop as they're rare on the used market.

The Lambda 45 is appropriate for:

-        Routine UV/Vis testing

-        Liquids analysis

-        Transparent solid samples

-        Regulatory tests requiring variable bandwidths

-        Highly absorbing samples

Modes of Operation

Every Lambda spectrophotometer from the previous generation supports the following modes of operation:

-        Scanning

-        Wavelength Program

-        Timedrive

-        Rate

-        Quant

-        Scanning Quant

Why Buy a Used Perkin Elmer Spectrophotometer from NLS?

As long as it’s verified to return accurate scan results, oftentimes the differences between new and used spectrophotometers are purely cosmetic. As such, buying used has some great upsides:

-        Lower costs: Yes, this is the #1 reason people ever buy anything used. It’s worth reiterating, though – buying a used Perkin Elmer spectrophotometer can save you tens of thousands of dollars.

-        Eco-friendly: By supporting the used equipment economy, you’re helping us extend the life of these perfectly functional instruments and keep them out of landfills.

-        Familiarity: If you're already a fan of Lambda systems, you can save money and stick with a system you know by buying used.

What to Look for in a Used Perkin Elmer Spectrophotometer

-        Sample Format: Most spectrophotometers read cuvettes, including the Perkin Elmer Lambda series. If your lab requires the higher throughput that plate reading allows, you’d likely find more value in a Perkin Elmer VICTOR plate reader.

-        Warranty: Used equipment isn’t always sold by trustworthy dealers. Some sellers may claim they “tested" a Lambda 35, for instance, when in reality all they did was plug it in and hit the power button. Consequently, it’s best to seek out units that are backed with a warranty of at least 30 days so your purchase is adequately protected.

-        PC and Software: Like most other spectrophotometers, Perkin Elmer’s Lambda units require a PC and software to function. If you don’t already have software on hand, be prepared to either (A) find a listing that includes a copy, or (B) pay Perkin Elmer a decent chunk of change for a copy of the software. It's important to note that software for past generations of spectrophotometers, like the Lambda 25, 35, and 45, are not available from Perkin Elmer anymore — you'll have to buy it from a third party.

-        Lamp Health: Lamps are rather expensive consumables. Ideally, you should be prepared to shell out cash for a new one or take the time to find a unit that doesn’t have much time logged on its lamp. Pro tip: Lambda lamps can typically withstand about 5,000 hours of usage, which equates to 5 to 7 years for the average lab.

-        Age: Older Lambda spectrophotometers may be more prone to failure (especially their lamps). It’s best to opt for newer units. Pro tip: older Lambda 25/35/45 systems are blue and white, while newer ones are green and white. Go for the green ones!
