Leica CM1850 UV Cryostat Features

Here are the key features of a Leica CM1850:

•  UV Disinfection: The Leica CM1850 has an automated UV system for disinfection. It illuminates and coats every exposed surface with ultraviolet light that eradicates any pathogens that could be lurking. Ultraviolet disinfection is fast, efficient, and completely safe for those near the cryostat.

•  Cooling system: The Leica CM1850 maintains a constant low temperature that ranges from -35 degrees Celsius to 0 degrees Celsius to freeze and preserve samples like liquids or tissues.

•  Sectioning: The Leica CM1850 has a cutting mechanism that a microtome does. It does a control cutting of thin and uniform sections of samples from 1µm to 60µm thickness range.

•  Safety: The Leica CM1850’s lid is equipped with safety handwheel and knife guards on the knife holders.

Our Testing Process

1. Initial Performance Test: A performance test is conducted to verify that the refrigeration system is functioning correctly.

2. Disassembly and Cleaning: The unit is fully disassembled and cleaned using dry ice blasting. For units equipped with specimen cooling heads, all silicone lines are replaced and refilled with new silicone fluid.

3. Interior Maintenance: All interior panels are thoroughly cleaned and repainted. Silicone fluid is highly acidic, and leaks often result from poor routine maintenance.

4. Refrigeration Inspection: Pressure readings are recorded, refrigeration lines are reinsulated, and any non-cooling issues are diagnosed and repaired. Amp draw tests are conducted to verify that the compressors are operating within manufacturer specifications.

5. Functional Checks: All features are tested to ensure proper operation, including: defrost system, nebulizer, peltier element, vacutome, specimen cooling system.

6. Knife Assembly and Cutting Wheel: The knife assembly is removed, cleaned, and oiled for proper function. The cutting wheel is adjusted for smooth operation.

7. Final Assembly and Appearance: All exterior panels are reassembled. If necessary, the cryostat is repainted to restore its appearance.

Our Cryostat Technician Checklist

At New Life Scientific, our technicians test each device thoroughly before shipping to verify performance and functionality. After our cryostat technician finishes the initial testing process, this Cryostat Technician Checklist is filled out to record the important information gathered throughout the repair process. This checklist will be available publicly after the unit has undergone tech completion and is ready for the customers.

Leica CM1850 UV Cryostat Applications

Diagnostic Histopathology - Rapid assessment of malignancy in biopsies. Pathologists can quickly examine tissue (e.g. tumor margins) to guide surgeons during operations.

Molecular Biology - Preserving RNA or DNA in tissues for molecular analysis. Studying embryonic tissue structure. Sectioning tissues for labeling with antibodies to study protein localization.

Preclinical and Animal Studies - Tissue processing from model organisms for toxicology, drug development, or genetic studies.

Semiconductor manufacturing - A semiconductor is a vital component of electronic devices. Advancing electronic components and devices depends on innovative techniques. One way scientists can explore quantum technologies and computing is by testing components and processes in a cryogenic environment like cryostats provide.
